Room Change Process & Roommate Support

Living with others sometimes requires students to navigate differences, changing circumstances, or other challenges within their living environment. Residential Life staff are available to help students communicate with roommates or suitemates, work through issues, and determine appropriate next steps.

When issues cannot be resolved or a different living environment may be appropriate, students may request a room change. Room changes are not guaranteed and depend on available housing, individual circumstances, and the needs of the residential community.

Students experiencing an immediate health or safety issue should not wait for the Room Change Process. Contact Residential Life, Campus Safety, or the appropriate campus resource for assistance.

Before Requesting a Room Change

When appropriate, students should take the following steps before requesting a room change:

  1. Communicate directly with your roommate or suitemate about the issue.
  2. Review your Roommate/Suitemate Agreement.
  3. Contact your Resident Assistant (RA) for support.
  4. Participate in a facilitated conversation or mediation when appropriate.
  5. Work with your Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) if additional support is needed.
  6. Submit a Room Change Request when the request period opens.

Resident Assistants receive training in conflict resolution and can help roommates discuss issues, clarify expectations, and work toward a resolution. More complex situations may be referred to a Residential Life professional staff member.

Depending on the circumstances, students may be asked to participate in these steps before a room change is considered.

How to Request a Room Change

Step 1 — Submit the Room Change Request Form
Students submit the official request during the published request period.

Step 2 — Residential Life Reviews Your Request
Residential Life reviews requests based on individual circumstances, available vacancies, housing needs, and other relevant factors.

Step 3 — Receive a Room Change Offer
If an appropriate space is available, you will receive a room change offer through your ÌÒÌ«ÀÉÓ³Ïñ email.

Step 4 — Accept or Decline the Offer
Respond by the deadline included in your offer. Failure to respond by the deadline may result in the offer being withdrawn.

Step 5 — Complete Your Move
If you accept the new assignment, you must complete your move within the communicated timeframe, completely vacate your previous room, and complete the required check-out and key-return process.

What to Know Before Requesting a Room Change

  • Submitting a request does not guarantee a room change.
  • A particular building, room, room type, or roommate cannot be guaranteed.
  • Housing availability may change throughout the semester.
  • Do not move into another room or independently swap rooms without written approval from Residential Life.
  • Continue living in your assigned room until Residential Life officially reassigns you.
  • A vacant bed or room is not necessarily available for a room change. Residential Life may hold vacancies for other housing needs.
  • A change in room type may result in a change to your housing charges.
  • If you accept a new assignment, you must complete your move by the stated deadline.
  • You are responsible for leaving your previous room clean and completing the appropriate check-out process.
  • Review or complete the Room Condition Report for your new assignment.

Residential Life considers individual circumstances, student wellbeing, documented accommodations, significant roommate or community issues, housing availability, occupancy needs, and other relevant factors when reviewing requests.

Roommate & Suitemate Agreements

First-year students complete roommate agreements during the first few weeks of the semester with support from their Resident Assistant. Returning students are also encouraged to use an agreement when living with roommates or suitemates.

The agreement gives residents an opportunity to discuss expectations before problems arise, including:

  • Personal belongings
  • Cleaning and use of shared spaces
  • ÌÒÌ«ÀÉÓ³Ïñors
  • Security
  • Other expectations for living together

If issues arise later, students can revisit the agreement with their roommate or suitemate and RA. If an agreement has not already been completed, Residential Life may ask residents to complete one as part of working through the situation.

Medical or Disability-Related Housing Requests

Students seeking a housing change related to a disability or medical accommodation should use ÌÒÌ«ÀÉÓ³Ïñ's established accommodation process. A Room Change Request does not replace a housing accommodation request.
